The 4th National Climate Assessment (NCA4) report identifies diverse aspects that stakeholders should prioritize in the fight against ongoing climate change and global warming. According to the U.S. Global Change Research Program (2018), this document creates a structured mechanism for approaching global climate change because it identifies diverse concepts related to the problem, establishes a research agenda, and outlines the vision for continued development. It also divides the country into distinct regions based on the associated threats to inform the mitigation and other related measures. In this context, NCA4 is fundamental for depicting the current global warming trends and informing responses.
NCA4 divides the nation into ten regions with specific climate change threats. For instance, it indicates that the northeast is grappling with air degradation, warm temperatures, diminishing quality of water, extreme weather patterns, and rising sea levels. It also suggests that the southeast region faces diverse threats that could lead to increasing natural and health hazards. They include frequent wildfires, extreme winter temperatures, changing sea levels, draught patterns, floods, hurricanes, and rising ocean temperatures (U.S. Global Change Research Program, 2018). Another region concerning climate change threats is the U.S. Caribbean, with projections indicating that it will encounter a rising sea level with rough wave actions, increasing temperatures, and diminishing freshwater. Assessments reveal that the Midwest will face increasing temperatures that promote pest proliferation. It will also suffer decreasing air quality and heavy rainfalls. Like these areas, the Northern Great Plains will gradually alter precipitation patterns, interfering with water availability. It will also encounter rising temperatures that threaten the agricultural practice in the area.
The report indicates that the Southern Great Plains is another NCA4 region facing climate change threats such as extreme and dramatic weather patterns, including floodings, hurricanes, heatwaves, and increasing temperatures. These variations have consequential impacts on the infrastructure and health sectors. The Northwest region encounters climate-related threats such as landslides, flooding, heat wave patterns, frequent wildfires, and drought. The increasing rate of these threats threatens the stability of the region’s hydropower, water supplies, and other facilities. The U.S. Global Change Research Program (2018) indicates that the Southwest area is struggling with rising sea levels, intermittent draughts, occasional destructive flooding, depletion of groundwater, and increasing atmospheric temperatures.
