Although we are in the 21st century, one would be wrong to assume that this fact means the world is moving in the right direction. Women in the world have been fighting for their place in a largely patriarchal society. Their role and contribution to society have always been downplayed and relegated to the kitchen and caring matters. Men have always been the ones to take up leadership positions, and it has become the norm to have them as leaders. However, as Belli writes in her article, in Latin America, this trend has not been the case for a long time now. Despite men exhibiting a character of machismoism in these countries, women have been trusted with the highest offices in the region. Countries like Chile and Argentina have elected women as presidents and with many women rising to higher political offices, this trend appears to have taken a stronghold. It should be noted that this region also boasts of higher violent crime rates against women. However, this has not broken the women’s spirit of seeking a better future for themselves and their loved ones.
