According to Butler, gender is a performative nature of sex. She indicates that gender does not exist as an objective aspect in its natural form. Gender stems out of the material bodily facts making it a social construct. Hence, gender and sex are intertwined as a cultural norm governing the materialization of bodies. Butler states that everything associated with sex or gender imposes ideological and cultural norms. Nothing is biological in Butler’s eyes but rather a cultural construct of being a male or female. Gender arises from several acts and never a fact of its own making, sex falls prey to such categorization. In contrast, non-social scientists depict the distinction between sexes as identified by biology thus, the differing genders.
In biology, chromosomes determine one’s sexuality. Males have XY as females contain XX chromosomes. However, it further provides for the intersection of the chromosomes where XXY creates a Klinefelter syndrome and XYY the Turner’s syndrome. Merging or disintegration of various forms of cells may create anomalies resulting in one being bi-sexual. Conversely, the occurrence of intrauterine hormonal effects affects the fetus and hormones. For example, an XX fetus may be born with some boy characteristics due to variances in androgen levels.
