The first reading is "Night to his Day: The Social Construction of Gender," by Judith Lorber. In the reading, the writer asserts that "For the individual, gender construction starts with the assignment to a sex category on the basis of what the genitalia look like at birth” (Lorber, 2008). The reading discusses the perception among some individuals that human beings are different from each other from the time of birth and the counter-argument that women and men are free beings who are conditioned by society to see their differences. In the second reading, “LGBTQ Parents Resisting Heteronormativity," the writer, Kate Henley Averett, states that the preference for gender normative behavior in children is linked to the belief that children are, by default heterosexual. Further, the article discusses the dilemma faced by lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) parents in the sexual socialization of their children, as the parents may not embrace these preferences. To deal with this dilemma, the parents develop a concept, which the writer describes as "the gender buffet." According to the Averett, “the gender buffet” is the result of the LGBTQ parents’ attempt to provide their children with a variety of gendered preferences for clothing, toys, and activities.
