Of all the numerous recognized differences between men and women in terms of roles and behaviors, some are realistic while others are found on inconsistent premises. The speech on TED TALK by a Nigerian Feminist Chimamanda Ngozi tilted “We should All Be Feminist” explores the subject of gender differences in an African setting, particularly in her culture that captures the unending debate on the extreme situation of gender differences in the world today. Studies conducted on gender roles, and differences in a scientific and psychological view merely reiterate to the predictable findings that are stereotypical. Borrowing from Ngozi’s narration which have been published as articles in many U.S. leading newspapers, the subject of gender differences initiates negative impacts to both genders in the society. Therefore, we should all be feminist regardless of the gender.
As pointed out by the speaker, in a restaurant or hotel settings, the manifestation of gender biasness appears to be a global experience perpetuated with assumptions and stereotypes. The female gender has always been prejudiced in the hotel industry in terms of employment as employers perceives that pregnant women or women with child cannot devote adequate time to employment. This has seen men preferred in many positions because they are capable offering longer hours at work. In another perspective, the hotel industry treats women as flower girls who possess as source of attraction to men customers. This has seen many hotels setting women’s size and beauty in the job qualifications. Additionally, Ngozi narrates relating scenario where male customers’ in a hotel are obligated to pay hotel bills to express masculinity and superiority. This action is interpreted as financial pressures on many men who cannot demonstrate this compulsion.
