Iran has recently been launching a tug of war in an attempt to control Latin America. The Iranian deputy foreign minister met the ambassadors from nine Latin-American countries in a bid to reestablish the country’s desire to deepen diplomatic ties with the region. Iran has managed to promote the anti-Israel and anti-American message in the Latin region. Hispan Tv which is an Iranian television network owned by the state airs in at least 16 Nations in the area. Iran has also made attempts to increase their diplomatic presence in Latin America by doubling the number of Iranian embassies from six as of 2005 to 11 in 2015.
In the wake of the 1979 revolution, the pioneers of the newly established Islamic Republican of Iran sought to be the agents of change both in their country and the world (Humire, 2015). Iran arranged an international conference on the reestablishment of Islamic movements. The meeting rallied 380 clerics spanning from 70 Nations around the world, including a good number from Latin America. The objective of the conference was to spread their revolution around the globe.
According to the American Southern Command, Iran has established over 80 centers with the aim of promoting the Shia Islam Culture in the entire Latin America region. Iran has also set up intelligence and military presence from the Southern Tierra del Fuego, Argentina to the border with the United States at the Rio Grande. Iran has been cementing its presence in the various Latin American countries (Humire, 2015).
In summary, Latin America has been considered as the foreign policy a foreign policy remote place for America. However, for the Islamic Republic of Iran, the Latin American region is regarded as a geopolitical prize. Saudi Arabia has woken up to this realization, and it is time American policy formulators took the initiative.
