Even though the electoral college does not necessarily match the popular will, it helps to reflect the rule of the overpowering majority, which means they require both widespread support and sufficient distribution of that support. To win the presidency, the presidential candidates need to carry different states and not just the actual states. On the other hand, if the electoral college was abolished, presidential candidates may concentrate on few states with many electoral votes. Because of the Electoral College, presidential candidates choose a running mate from a different state, even if this minimizes the likelihood of third parties being presidents as voters tend to coalesce around the two major political parties.
