Topic 3 DQ 1

.3-1    Create a scenario in which a client would need an assessment. Share your scenario with your colleagues. Respond to your peers, sharing the type of assessment you feel is appropriate based on what they presented.

ANDRE   I have a self-referral, Ben. He is a 60-year-old LCSW employed as a Substance Abuse Counselor. He reports that he no longer feels the passion nor the skills to continue working as a counselor. Ben states that at one time he was very enthusiastic about providing counseling services, as he felt that he was a highly thought of contributor to his Interdisciplinary team. The loss of passion began when he noticed that his female co-workers treated him differently after he attempted to date one of his co-workers, who he felt that he had developed a friendship with. He also began to notice that he primarily relied on limit-setting when he interacted with clients, rather than having productive dialogue. He expresses thoughts of leaving counseling and beginning to coach girls soccer, since he volunteered as a part-time coach and he saw skills development in the girls that he coached. Ben wants to experience job satisfaction, but also wants to have healthy relationships in and outside of the work place. He wants coaching in his decision-making process and relationship skills.  What type of assessments would be useful for Ben?

Tara   A male client in his late 30s lives alone, three kids, has had problems in the past with staying in a committed, happy relationship. He’s a principle of a high school, owns a trucking company and referees for the NFL. He describes himself as a great father and financially successful. He’s been in relationships in the past but never considered them to be serious because he felt used, and though he stayed in the relationships to make it work, the females ended up leaving him. It is salient to the client that this has become a pattern. The client is having issues having a woman that is goal-oriented and not financially dependent on him. The client has become de-motivated to date, feeling he’s not worthy enough to have a woman version of himself. The client’s self-esteem in dating has declined significantly, worried he will never find a wife that loves him unconditionally.

My peers, what type of assessment is appropriate based on what I presented?

Lewis   John was release from prison a few weeks ago. He had spent the last five years in lockup. He is on parole and must attend drug classes twice a week for the next three months. After a few days he found employment during landscaping work. He has done his best in his opinion to get his ex-wife to speak with him so he can see his child, but she just ignores him. While John has no desire to go back to prison, between parole appointments, attending drug classes and working he has no time for himself or reconnecting with family. He is starting to get frustrated and wants to know what he should do next.

3-2    Thinking about your niche, what assessment tools will be best for your clients? Describe the training requirements needed to administer the assessment. How will you prepare for the requirements?

Andre   The coaching assessments that I plan on using reflect my overall philosophy about coaching, not necessarily a niche market. I believe that when people make effective choices and it enhances their self-efficacy, it leads to higher quality of life. The DiSC assessment looks at the factors that affect one’s choices (Bonnstetter & Suiter, 2011). Dominance represents an emphasis on achieving results. Influence represents the ideas of the coaches’ influences on others. Steadiness is one’s ability to maintain emotional balance. Conscientiousness is the focus given to one’s tasks. Although credentialing is not required to do the test. 12 hours of training is offered that allows the coach to lead training workshops, increasing this core competency. This assessment requires 12 hours of training to be a trainer.

The motivation and the awareness of the need for change are indicators that show the likelihood of the client’s success (LaMorte, 2019). The Motivators Assessment Certification program enhance one’s knowledge of the seven Dimensions of Motivation, showing core values individually and how they interact together to drive satisfaction. This assessment requires 10 hours of training to be a certified trainer.

Blanca    Thinking about your niche, what assessment tools will be best for your clients? Describe the training requirements needed to administer the assessment. How will you prepare for the requirements?

Having used a variety of assessment tools, the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) is my first choice as a coach. The test measures personality preference and it can facilitate increased self-awareness (resulting in empowerment) and enhanced diversity appreciation (resulting in understanding and acceptance of others) – aspects needed in life, at work and as global citizens of the world.

The Myers-Briggs is a good test for clients because it indicates someone’s personality and how clients can be coached. The test will allow for the coach to be able to read a clients behaviors and know how to coach them. The test has many indicators that can be used in a positive coaching plan as well as a good student plan for the client to allow them to move forward. Being able to know what a client is thinking is a plus because it is a huge advancement in the clients success. Having the results from the Myers-Briggs allows the coach to research the client and be able to suggest coaching plans.

Response to Andre.
Your referral seems to have quite a typical case of personal crisis against his profession. His love and excitement for his job seems to have gone down over time due to decreasing zeal for the same. According to Wilkey, Lundgren and Amadeo (2013), the underlying drive behind most professionals is the burning desire to keep delivering as per their assigned duties and roles. By trying out different things, this zeal can slowly be returned. Ben seems to be doing exactly that. The MBTI would be the best one to use in this case, as it helps in the identification of preferences.
