What Are the Building Blocks of Language?
A language is a composition of rules and symbols that must fulfill particular criteria to achieve meaningful communication. Therefore, the symbols comprising sounds, written characters, or gestures must be meaningful, generative, and adhere to specific rules to convey an intended message. A language has a hierarchical organization of building blocks with underlying structural rules to give it meaningful communication. The various building blocks include phonemes, morphemes, lexemes, syntax, and context.
These building blocks of language, alongside semantics, grammar, and pragmatics, usually work in harmony to relay meaningful communication among people. They are defined as illustrated below: A phoneme is the smallest identifiable part of sound during communication. It may trigger a meaning change in a language but does not possess meaning by itself since it has varying meanings. A morpheme is the smallest part of a word that has a specific meaning in a language. It is usually the meaningful part of a word and is further categorized into free morphemes and bound morphemes. A lexeme forms a group of inflected or varying forms of a specific word. Syntax forms the rules that govern whole sentences construction during communication to form meaningful sentences and phrases. The context shows how all the language blocks mentioned above work in harmony to produce meaningful communication in a language.
