Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder (OCPD) consists of extreme concern for perfectionism, order, and control. There may be impaired psychosocial functioning when there is a failure to control the self and the environment (Cain et al., 2015). There are excessive concerns for rules, details, schedules, organization, perfectionism, and extreme performance concerns. There is a significant correlation between various perfectionism dimensions and OCPD. There is no one causal factor, as OCPD is a complex and multi-causal psychological phenomenon and is likely linked to the relationship between biological or genetic linkage, social and environmental factors. It is important to consider the cultural and religious context, as some impose strict rules and emphasize rigidity.
Among the symptoms is an extreme concern with details, extreme perfectionism, where a mismatch in schedules creates intense discomfort and rigid behaviors. There is also extreme ethical rigidity, unwillingness, or reluctance to delegate tasks where others distrust others. The symptom of perfectionism may affect daily functioning when an individual gets anxious or is constantly frustrated when outcomes are not what they expect. At other times, they withdraw emotionally to control situations, which in turn affect the ability to form close relations with others. Perfectionism and rigidity are one way to control a situation, but people with OCPD, tend to be inflexible (Riddle et al., 2016). Since there is intolerance of uncertainty among those with OCPD there is an extreme need for stability, but since OCPD is understudied, there is a need to understand what influences coping after treatment.
