Psychologists have to rely on communication skills when interacting with patients and even carrying out research. Since a psychologist seeks to understand people and how or why they act, a communication course will be beneficial as it provides a new perspective about human relations and interactions (Brinthaupt, Counts, & Hurst, 2012). Psychology can also directly impact how an individual communicates. A double major comprising of psychology and communication is critical to ensure that a student can improve their skills in both fields.
A psychologist focuses on human behavior while communication entails how individuals exchange information. What an individual says or how they express themselves while communicating can help provide insights about their behavior. During practice, a psychologist has to explore how their patients communicate, which can then reveal any underlying psychological issues affecting the person (Peterson et al., 2014). Communication is an opportunity to understand how others feel and think and the dynamics involved, and this can be beneficial in a professional context.
