Psychology of queueing aims at evaluating how individuals react and respond to lines. Ideally, people are likely to get caught up in queues, especially in shopping stores, airports, and railway stations, among other places. In most cases, people respond to queue in different ways; there are those who see it as time wastage, and there are those who become frustrated with the rate at which the line flows. It is necessary to note that different researchers have tried ways that organizations may use to improve the experiences that customers get while waiting in the queues. The report examines and evaluates the various psychological factors which are likely to influence the cost of waiting and operations of a company that may be improved using the psychology of queueing.
There are different psychological factors that may impact the cost of waiting; these may include the nature of the line. Ordinarily, the development of numerous short queues help in increasing the number of choices that customers may have; this is considered to be effective because customers want to have many choices as possible (Tett, 2018). Having multiple lines make it possible for the customer to select queues that appear to progress. However, companies feel that having numerous short queues may not be effective because they cause logistical logjams.
Additionally, the nature of the line also has an impact on the customers. For instance, when the queue is arranged like a snake, it helps in creating the illusion of continuous progress. When the individuals in the queue feel like the line is making small movements, they become more satisfied, and they are less likely to become irritated. It is, however, important to note that companies consider single lines to be more effective because they make it possible when providing entertainment, which is key in promoting distraction to the individuals; this strategy help individuals not to focus more on the time they have spent on the line.
