Positive punishment involves effecting a negative consequence after an unwanted behavior is demonstrated to make the behavior less likely to occur in the future. An unpleasant consequence is often introduced to the subject to discourage undesirable behavior. An example of positive punishment is a teacher scolding a student for picking his nose in the classroom. The act of scolding is the unpleasant consequence introduced to the student and is meant to deter the behavior of picking his nose. On the other hand, negative punishment is when a particular desired stimulus is removed after an unwanted behavior is demonstrated to prevent the behavior from occurring again. The subject is denied something pleasant to discourage undesirable behavior. An example of negative punishment is taking a toy from a child after he refuses to act appropriately at the dinner table. The two types of timeout procedures are exclusionary and non-exclusionary timeout (Wolf et al., 2006).
