Consider the following scenario: A death row inmate who is less than 24 hours away from execution has called you to his cell. He chooses to make his final appeal to you because he knows that you are a Christian. He states the following: “I have been convicted of a heinous crime, and I have been sentenced to death. But I have seen the error of my ways. I thought God was merciful and forgiving. Why am I not receiving forgiveness? I'm very sorry for what I did, and I'm not the same person that I was 14 years ago."
Based on the above scenario, respond to the following questions:
1. How can you explain the difference between forgiveness in Christ and being accountable to the State to this inmate?

Forgiveness in Christ Versus Being Accountable to the State
There is a massive difference between forgiveness in Christ and being accountable to the state. First, forgiveness in the Bible follows a different script from the state laws. In this case, Christian forgiveness has been described as God’s promise not to count people’s sins against them (Zavada, 2021). this requires repentance and turning away from the sins. In the case scenario, the inmate has received Cristian forgiveness since he has repented his sins and vows not to repeat the sinful deeds. Being accountable to the state means adhering to the laws, which is the main script on which forgiveness is based. In the case scenario, the State has passed its judgment and will execute it. According to Grey (2019), forgiveness without the evidence of remorse leaves victims vulnerable to future exploitation. Therefore, it can be argued that the state does not see evidence of remorse in the inmate, which means that the execution of the sentence will go on. Second, Christian forgiveness is intended to bring people closer to God. On the contrary, being accountable to the state means following laws to keep order and harmony. Therefore, the state and the Bible do not have a similar understanding of both forgiveness and accountability.
