Step 1: Selecting a Community Problem and Context
The community for the health promotion program is Latino. Specifically, the program targets Latino children. Among the Latinos, overweight and obesity is a major problem. The problem is more prevalent among children.
Step 2: Describing the Problem
The Latino population ranks among the second highest rates of obesity in the U.S. About 60% of Hispanics are either overweight or obese (Holub et al., 2013). Of the 60%, more than half are obese. Children below 15 years form the largest number of all the obese groups. For Latino children, the period from infancy through adolescence subjects than to an increased risk of being overweight and obese. This subjects the children to an increased risk for chronic diseases, poor self-esteem, bullying, depression and eventually premature death. Obesity during childhood presents various risks for adulthood.
Overweight and obese children are at risk of becoming overweight and obese adults (Sahoo et al., 2015). The children are likely to experience similar problems in the future. There is a need to undertake corrective measures to address the problem of childhood obesity among Latino children. The issue robs them of good health and productive lives.
Step 3: Identifying Root Causes of the Problem
The living conditions of the Latinos subject them to obesity. The low levels of education and income contribute to high unemployment rates. Latinos live in poor housing conditions and neighborhoods (Arcury et al., 2015). The high levels of poverty among community members mean that they cannot afford to consume nutritious foods. The absence of full-service grocery stores means that families have to rely on fast foods. Further, given that a majority of the community members have low incomes, they cannot afford expensive nutrition’s fresh foods. They have to depend on the cheap fast foods which have adverse effects on their health. Children shop in stores which sell unhealthy foods at cheap process.
Additionally, a majority of the Latinos live in neighborhoods that are unsafe for physical activity (Chang & Kim, 2017). It is not possible for the community members to engage in physical activity given the high level of insecurity. Parents cannot allow their children to participate in physical exercise activities for the fear that something bad could happen to them. Parents have to keep their children indoors which prevents them from participating in physical activity.
While the children are at home, they watch TV for long hours. Other engage in playing video games which further contributes to the problem of overweight and obesity. The failure to engage in physical activity and consuming unhealthy diets and drinks increases the prevalence of the problem.
