Prevention of obesity in schools and communities is one of the public health priorities that are linked to economic and health benefits. According to the Duke Global Health Institute (2014), the lifetime medical costs for managing obesity in one child are about 19,000 dollars. Based on the number of obese children in the U.S, the costs reach about 14 billion dollars (Duke Global Health Institute, 2014). In this respect, public health interventions are required to solve the problem. For the prevention efforts to be effective, they should be channeled to communities and schools. However, all the stakeholders must be prepared to meet the cost implications of the prevention measures. The expenses involved in addressing the health concern at community and school levels can be classified as direct and indirect costs. The former result from inpatient and outpatient health services such as drug therapy and radiological and laboratory tests.
The U.S. Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (MEPS) indicated that the medical expenses for addressing childhood obesity in 2008 reached 42 billion dollars and 86 billion dollars in 2006 (Finkelstein & Strombotne, 2010). The indirect expenses include the forgone resources in the process of managing obesity. Finkelstein and Strombotne (2010) classified these costs into four categories – insurance, wages, transportation, and school-based food programs. The welfare expenses have been estimated to cost 150 dollars per capita. Additionally, the country should prepare to spend more than 2.7 billion dollars every year as transportation costs for overweight patients (Hammond & Levine, 2010).
