Globalization is one of the most witnessed cause of political, social, and economic transformations in the 21st century. Many nations have been linked together through either a common interest in trade, culture, technology, or diplomatic activities such as labor movements. These globalization activities and actions have shaped several sectors within the society. One of the most affected sectors is the political economy. In pursuit of understanding the effects of globalization on International political alignment and formations, scholars, Rogowski (1990) and Scheve and Slaughter (2001) have focused their interest on domestic cleavage as an effect of globalization. In this essay, the reader is provided with a summary and an analysis of “How Trade Affects Domestic Political Alignments. How Trade Affects Domestic Political Alignments by Rogowski (1990) and “Cleavages in Public Preferences About Globalization”, in from Globalization and the Perceptions of American Workers by Scheve and Slaughter (2001).
There are various policies that guides globalization. These policies determine how people will view globalization and the opinions cleavage they offer. In some cases, there maybe a unanimous agreement in the formed opinions regarding globalization policies. On the other hand, globalization policies may attract dividend opinion cleavage, with some in support and others offering a contrasting view. In understanding these opinion cleavages therefore, one gets the opportunity to understand the people’s preferences on globalization (Scheve and Slaughter, 2001). This can be achieved by analyzing various economic models, and for this essay the focus is on the opinions towards trade and immigration policies. This is in the efforts of explaining why some individuals or group of individuals would oppose some types of globalization while accepting others. The basic assumptions in this discuss is that individuals view policy as a factor of self interest and not national interest (Scheve & Slaughter, 2001). This explains that those who wins or benefits from the policy will support and those who lose will oppose (Rogowski, 1990)
Effects of globalization policies can be understood on the basis through which the various factors of that intersect together or the specific factors such as capital, labor, and any other input of production that the individual owns is able to move or be moved around the industries (Scheve & Slaughter, 2001). This implies that trade globalization can be felt if individual factors of production are able to move freely from one industry to another. In this essay the focus is on labor and capital.
