Leaders need to be likable; as they are more effective in the way, they influence the people to achieve the desired goals. Loved leaders exhibit high levels of emotional intelligence to manage both their personal and followers’ emotions. In addition are desirable qualities such as integrity, generosity, humility, positivity, and ease in forming connections, stability, excellent listening skills, focus, and honesty. A survey by McAllister et al. (2019) indicated that subordinates rate their leaders based on their likeability than the leaders’ actual behaviors. This shows that besides possessing other good qualities, a leader should also be generally likable for them more useful.

On the contrary, leaders are not as effective if they are not likable as their followers will not feel positive about the leaders, nor value the relationship they have with them in the work environment. Moreover, the work environment demotivates subordinates and stops them from achieving their best.
