What is Your Failure?
A great deal of literature focuses on what leaders need to do to become successful. Different authors have different proposals on the different characteristics that make up a good leader. Some believe that leaders need to be loud and assertive while others hold that leaders should remain calm and reserved (Lazenby, 2015). Whereas these are essential characteristics of leaders, it is critical to appreciate that leaders do experience failure in their journey of leadership. Essentially, failure is part of leadership and leaders should utilize it to improve on themselves.
Thasunda Brown Duckett narrates her life experiences to indicate what it means to raise up from a life of failure and proceed to become a respected leader. At a young age, Ms. Duckett experienced economic uncertainty firsthand. When her father lost his job, the family had to relocate from New Jersey to Texas to increase the chances of the mother getting a job because she had a degree (Gelles, 2019). They put everything they owned in a car and moved to the new location. Here, they had to start all over again. They even did not have furniture and had to use crates. Besides the economic struggle, Ms. Duckett experienced racism in school because she was black.

Today, Ms. Duckett is the chief executive of Chase consumer banking where she is working hard to improve financial health and literacy served by the organization. Before the current role, Ms. Duckett served as the C.E.O. of Chase Auto Finance (Gelles, 2019). Ms. Duckett demonstrates that leaders can pass through challenging situations in life. Challenges in life should not discourage individuals from becoming effective leaders. Instead of focusing on the failures, Ms. Duckett demonstrates that it is possible to overcome a difficult childhood life and proceed to become a successful individual.

At some point, the parents would tell Howard to tell the bill collectors that they were not at home. Due to such experience, Howard wanted to do things differently. He wan...
