Companies find it challenging to plan effectively and deliver its products using inadequate information and communication technology. Supply chain depends on the company’s levels of integration of its information systems (Wisner, Tan & Leong, 2014). The development of ICT solutions like the Enterprise Resource Planning System had made it easier for the integration process, a necessary process in a geographically spread value chain (Wisner, Tan & Leong, 2014). ERP systems are important, especially when it comes to making strategic decisions. That is why most businesses have developed the interest in increasing their levels of effectiveness using the Enterprise Resource Planning System because of its numerous benefits (Wisner, Tan & Leong, 2014).
Some of the key benefits include organizational changes like new business process, change in work procedures and effective administrative and operational activities. Integration enhances global standards of work practice leading to numerous work improvements. Most companies seek integration because both customers and suppliers demand good services from them (Qrunfleh, & Tarafdar, 2014). The main benefit of integration is to provide one interface and harmonize all the operation process.
For example, individually owned business like the ICA Sweden, a small grocery store a selling organic food, has reaped the benefits of their ERP system. With more than 1,000 stores, ICA Sweden is the most popular grocery retailer operating with independent ICA partners with each operating their store making it possible for them to tailor various concepts to fit the local demand (Tsai et al., 2015). With millions of Norwegians crossing to Sweden to buy organic food, the grocery market in Sweden has been dominated by ICA with a total market share to 72 percent. With increased demand, the challenge of operating in a complex market ICA adopted an ERP system known as the Slingan (Tsai et al., 2015).
The new system is meant to save them from the cost of running the business and to share product information with other stores, warehouses and suppliers all over the world (Tsai et al., 2015). The main store in Livegen focuses on sorting, a process done centrally. Other grocery stores do not manage any information system. The main group ICA develops and manages all the information system and provides IT support (Wang et al., 2015). The main IT system known as Slingan is connected to all ICT systems within the company’s supply and distribution chain located remotely. (Wang et al., 2015). The Slingan and other smaller stores can access the ICA central storage database for effective operations by making orders; review the availability of products and exchange information and new ideas with other ICA stores. The main function of the ERP is its shared database that accommodates multiple functions from different units (Wang et al., 2015).
