Introduction to Qualitative Research
Pieces of writing are meant to convey a message or to convince readers about a particular topic. Certain writers make the mistake of believing that they can make any piece of writing. However, academic or scholarly writing is different. They are challenging and require writers to follow certain techniques. Most readers of academic or scholarly works are professionals that only care about supported and verified data. In this essay, I argue that academic and scholarly writing must follow certain standards so that readers can make sense of the contents.
Griffies, Perrie & Hull (2013), argue that a good piece of writing must start with an introduction which must also follow a certain order. The introduction can start with a general statement or a question as long as it can grab the attention of the reader. The introduction must move from a general statement to a specific statement that eventually narrows down to the thesis statement. The thesis statement is the most important part of the introduction because it gives readers information on what one is going to talk about in the paper. After the introduction comes to the body of the paper. In the body, writers give evidence and support for the paper. Every paragraph in the body must have ideas which can be related to the thesis statement (Griffies, Perrie & Hull, 2013). The statements in the body must transition well, so that they can create a better flow and make sense to the readers. Each paragraph also needs to have several examples so that they can provide sufficient support for each argument and they must be supported well by reliable sources. At the end is the conclusion. The conclusion provides writers with the opportunity to wrap up their main arguments and points and a precise and clear manner.
Research papers follow a different path. A good research paper must start with an abstract that gives readers a brief look at what the paper is all about. The abstract contains a brief background of the problem, the purpose of the research paper, the methodology, findings, and conclusions and recommendations arrived at (Westervelt, 2017). The introduction follows, and it must contain background information on the research question. The literature review with several real sources follows, and it gives the readers evidence of works that have been done on the topic with key takeaways. There should be arguments supporting the research question and those opposing it. The methods that were used in the study must follow the literature review, after which follow the results of the research. The discussion and findings of the research must also be included in the research paper before conclusions are stated. Depending on the paper one is writing, the contents must follow the ones stated above.
Coherence is important in every written product. There is a need to ensure that pieces of writing are more unified, consistent, and logical. Without effective coherence, pieces of writing can be hard to follow. Specifically, it can be difficult to establish the connection between paragraphs, sentences, and works. However, writing coherently makes it possible to connect ideas in every paragraph a...
