Essay Instructions:

The purpose of this assignment is to connect the ideas we’re discussing in class to both real world examples and academic thinking and debates.
For this assignment, you are to find 3 stories in the (digital) print media which relate to the content we discuss in class. Each story must be about a different course module (such as non-profits, social enterprise, co-operatives, community development corporations etc.). For each story, you have to conceptually link the content to 1) what we discuss in class and 2) to an academic journal article about the same topic.
Please submit all your media stories and academic articles in a separate attachment (collated, if possible). The academic articles must be peer reviewed, and all media must be written in English so I can evaluate it. Media can be local, regional, national or international, from anywhere in the world. Blogs aren’t acceptable, nor are media releases found on the web sites of CED organizations, or editorials or op eds. Media stories must be published from January 19th, 2021 and beyond, so I know you are reading current stories.
You may not use journal articles from the syllabus or which are in course ppts (such as the article by Squazzoni on community development corporations). None of your media stories or journal articles should be the same as other students in this class.
Each journal entry must be 1.25 to 1.5 pages single spaced, with standard margins and a font size of 12.

Non-Profits
I read an article from CNN authored by Adeline Chen in which she provided details of how a non-profit has been instrumental in helping South Africa combat Covid-19. As per the article, the non-profit is known as the South African Ventilator Emergency Project (SAVE-P). This organization decided to offer help develop ventilators that would then be integrated into the country's healthcare system. At the beginning of the pandemic, South Africa only had 3800 ventilators against 58 million people. However, through the help of SAVE-P, the country was able to add around 2000 ventilators. The value acquired from such an organization's actions is beyond impeccable considering the global shortage of ventilators since the pandemic's announcement.
This article made me remember the lecture on non-profits and how they can be instrumental in developing a country. From the lecture, we learned that non-profit organizations provide goods, services, and experiences. Also, we learned that non-profit organizations are a vital part of community life. Their presence should, therefore, be welcomed because of their contribution to society. Another crucial aspect of non-profit organizations is that they are independent of the governments' influence and direction. Their existence and their decisions are not tied to the wishes of the government of the day. What the above means is that they exist outside of the control of the government. Looking at the story above, one notices a few instances of congruence. First, there is the aspect of non-profit organizations being crucial for society or the community. SAVE-P showcased its usefulness to society by ensuring that the healthcare system of South Africa will not be strained during the pandemic. The organization provided a service whose importance is beyond reproach.
Shi's article titled 'Nonprofit Service Continuity and Responses in the Pandemic: Disruptions, Ambiguity, Innovation, and Challenges' was published in May 2020. The article details how non-profit organizations had to adjust their operations to ensure service delivery continuity during the pandemic. Even though the focus is on NPOs that offer homeless support services, the article does help shed light on the usefulness of NPOs, especially during pandemics. Even though the NPOs had to adjust and adapt to the time changes, they still found ways to be effective and continue their service provision as was described in class. The article speaks to the SAVE-P NPO's innovation that decided to venture into a difficult but crucial aspect of the healthcare sector. The agility and innovativeness of NPOs have indeed been a great addition or factor in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic. This is a testament to their commitment to their attributes.
Community Development Corporations
The article from Mahoning Matters article titled 'Playing the Long Game: Revitalizing Glenwood Avenue' was written by Hardin on February 5, 2021. The article offers details of how Youngstown Neighborhood Development Corporation (YNDC) has been instrumental in developing Glenwood Avenue in Mahoning County. The community development corporation has dedicat...
