This section discusses a historical/legislative/social event that impacted Cleveland Clinic's expansion, which is based in Cleveland, Ohio. Cleveland Clinic is a not-for-profit multispecialty medical center established in 1921 (Cleveland Clinic). Since its inception, the clinic has experienced immense growth in physical expansion within and beyond Cleveland. However, most of its growth can be traced back to the 1960s when Cleveland city started the urban renewal initiative, in line with the federal government's efforts to clean up cities. According to Chowkwanyun (2018), Cleveland Clinic was at the center of this initiative, which involved the condemnation of deteriorating neighborhoods by local authorities. Condemned neighborhoods were transferred to developers who built hospitals, housing units, and universities, among others. The Cleveland Clinic (2004) reveals that Cleveland Clinic bought land in Cleveland's condemned neighborhoods and tore down existing buildings in preparation for new constructions during this era. Also, the construction of new hospital structures allowed the clinic to increase its size in terms of beds. For instance, Cleveland Clinic (2004) indicates that 173 beds were added in the newly constructed South Hospital. The expansions were so extensive that the Cleveland community, especially those affected by the initiative (minority groups), became disgruntled. The public's reactions towards the clinic's expansion efforts were too negative to be ignored, and the clinic gained a "predatory image" (Cleveland Clinic, 2004). The clinic had to do something to improve its relationship with the public. The first step was to support the Clement Center, which served the local community and provided them with jobs (Chowkwanyun, 2018). As a result of mended relationships with the local community, Cleveland Clinic could expand further in the 1980s.

Cleveland Clinic offers a range of services to the community to promote the general public's health in Cleveland and beyond. The clinic has outreach programs in place to help meet the needs of the community. Through these outreach programs, it has been able to improve the health of the community. The community benefit realized from the outreach programs was $39.2 and $40.5 million in 2018 and 2019, respectively (Cleveland Clinic, 2019). One specific outreach program that has impacted the community is the regular community health fairs. According to Cleveland Clinic (2019), the clinic offers free health screening services to thousands of citizens through these community health fairs.
The screening services are classified into four health fairs: Tu Familia, Victory in Pink, Celebrating Sisterhood, and the Cleveland Minority Men's Health Fair.
