Low birth weight is when a baby is born weighing less than 5pounds, 8 ounces. Despite some low-birth-weight babies being healthy, others exhibit serious health issues that require medical intervention (University of Rochester Medical Center, N.d.). The presence of a low weighing child in a household disables the functionality of a family, creating a medical and psychological burden due to the intensive care associated with it. Also, A lowly weighing child can act as a stressor on family resources and finances. The child takes the attention of its family members most of the time, decreasing their economic outcome (Drota et al., 2013).
Disparities such as concentrated poverty, dilapidated housing conditions, the neighborhood of upbringing, and local service delivery somehow contribute to low-birth-weight babies. Such disparities may be correlated with ethnic inclinations as, most Black and Latino populations in the US are associated with impoverished backgrounds, which result in nonculturally astute environments pushed to obsucrity by poverty.
