The role of Washington State prison officers in ensuring public safety is of great significance. The State equally recognizes their commitment to keeping safety in the entire State. Success in this field requires calmness, compassion, strength, and tolerance, which all our employees conform to. In addition, our officers often adhere to the highest professional standards, especially when things fail to go as planned. It a career that brings with it a higher risk and responsibility. And we appreciate them for their relentless duties.
The correctional industry has its fair share of challenges. Our employees constantly seek pay rise, a factor which nearly everyone agrees is their right. The quantity and quality of work demanded from them are mentally taxing, and improved financial compensation is their right and a morale booster that will see them work efficiently. However, the employer's underlying circumstances make it very hard to raise the wages above the proposed three percent. The State's legislature has established a comprehensive corrections system for convicted violators of the law to ensure public safety's primary goal. Presently, the Department of Corrections has 12 prison facilities with custody levels that range from minimum to maximum. These 12 facilities serve nearly 20 000 inmates (Prison Facilities). An estimated 5,700 employees are serving their needs. With a $1.8 billion budget, it remains untenable to raise employee salaries to the proposed rates.
