Building upon past experiences has been observed as one of the key ingredients to becoming a successful leader in today's society. The community around us has a large number of leaders who try to put up a new mask by burying the past and refuse to ground themselves in their life stories. Most of these leaders are caught up in the trend of many millennial where they are always chasing fame, money, and power instead of concentrating on their intrinsic motivations. This trend drives these leaders to lose touch with reality as instead of inner satisfaction they focus on eternal gratification. It is vital for one not to become a glory seeker leader who is after the accumulation of wealth, money, fame, and power but inhibit the character of an authentic leader who is more feasible in today's globalized world economy. Real leadership is said to start from one being authentic and the leader being a real person, this is derived from ones deeper held beliefs, principles and values that one is led by. Based on the above statement this paper is going to look at the influence of personal life experience to become an effective modern-day leader who many refer to as an authentic leader.
The new global job market has changed the traditional way of thinking and doing things, it demands more creativity and innovativeness as well as leaders who are collaborative and believe in distribution of leadership in all levels (Avolio & Gardner, 2005). The above change has brought about high calibre leaders who are committed to make a difference in the world and leave a legacy. Today's leader quality is judged by the lasting result they achieve within their area of leadership or organization. These leaders who prosper and are most influential in society today all have life experiences to share that in one way or the other helped to shape their leadership traits and skills. The leadership style that existed decades ago is slowly fading and a new crop of authentic leaders is emerging. According to George (2015), authentic leaders observed a natural way of leading. Some of the common influences include, the impact of the parents; this is where the life and the time shared between them and their parents, for example, Starbucks owner Schultz; during an interview confess that his father accidents played a big role for him to want to run a company that takes care of its employees in case of such accidents. True to his visions and philosophy when he bought Starbucks he ensured that every employee has a health coverage including the part-time workers.
Leaders like Richard Branson observe influence from their parents. Richard was born in very supportive family that was surrounded by love. His dad was a lawyer and the mother worked as an airline hostess. He observers that his parents encouraged his independence and for him to stand on his two feet.
