Kantian ethics and the Smart Theory of responsibility describe what gives an action moral worth. Kant’s perspective on the moral worth of an action is based on deontological moral theories, which indicate that the rightness or wrongness of actions does not depend on their consequences but on whether they fulfill our duty. Kant argues that an action can have moral worth if the person who undertook the action was motivated by morality. This implies that an individual is bad or good depending on the motivation of their actions and not the positive or negative consequences of those actions (Barron, 2018). As a result, if person X was trying to kill person Y and X asks person Z where Y is, Z must tell the truth because the action of lying is immoral even if it means saving the life of Y.
