Medications are like a double-edged sword—they can save you and kill you at the same time. These are originally designed to save lives. However, with improper handling and dosing, these can also kill a person. Some of us think that people can control medications. However, the reality is medications also have the power to control people. These objects invited people to a manipulation game that nobody can indeed win.
One of the narratives designed to show how medications maliciously manipulated people is Dopesick, which is written by Beth Macy and published in 2018. The central theme of the story revolves around how medications control people. However, the novel also tackles the way people manage medications.
Dopesick concentrates on how, Purdue Pharma a well-known company, controlled the distribution of OxyContin as if it were a drug cartel. A $4 -billion promotional campaign has been launched by Purdue Pharma from 1996 to encourage both the sales representatives and the consumers. Sales representatives are offered extravagant cash checks and luxurious vacations, which forcefully urge them to aid the company towards prosperity. Because of their fervor, the hospitals and the doctor’s clinics and offices across the United States were immediately bombarded by OxyContin (Macy). And this is how the manipulation game began.
At first, the doctors assumed that they are the leading players in the game. Little did they know that they are the main puppets in the game since they are the key to the success of Purdue Pharma. With their approval and endorsement, OxyContin will be famous across the United States...
