The significance of a title such as The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is so easy to discover. However, in other works (for example, Measure for Measure) the full significance of the title becomes apparent to the reader only gradually. Choose a literary work of merit and show how the significance of its respective titles is developed through the authors’ use of devices such as contrast, repetition, allusion, and point of view.
More often than not, the title of a piece of work conveys the significance that is central to the work as a whole. For example, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, per se, summarizes the importance of the whole novel. However, for other works such as Much Ado about Nothing and To Kill a Mockingbird, authors conceal the real significance of their work by using literal devices such as repetition and point of view (Shakespeare, 2017). Often times, these devices help authors to create and underscore significant concepts for their work without having to make them apparent to their audiences. In this paper, we illustrate how authors of Much Ado about Nothing and To Kill a Mockingbird use literal devices to develop the implication of their titles.
In William Shakespeare’s Much Ado about Nothing play; Shakespeare juxtaposes the use of pun with the title of the play, which grants it an inherent significance to the whole play. Shakespeare centers the entire work on the misfortunes that befall a group of interrelated people (Shakespeare, 2017). He captures most of these mishaps within the play, all of which attributed to a common vice; eavesdropping. For instance, one of the misfortunes arises from a complete misunderstanding between Claudio and Hero.
