The Gods Must Be Crazy
The film Gods Must Be Crazy is set in South Africa. It tells the story of the remote community called San. A passing plane drops a Coca-Cola bottle to the land inhabited by San. The bottle becomes the source of misunderstandings and evils in the community prompting Xi, the leader of the San, to return the bottle to the edge of the earth and return it to the gods, who the community believes provided the bottle. Along the way, Xi faces several civilization hurdles that lead him to jail. He later helped a white teacher and her students from guerrilla fighters using his traditional tranquilizer arrows. The movie fits into Binyavanga Wainaina’s argument in “How to Write about Africa.”
Wainaina uses satire to address his audience about writing stories about Africa. A closer look into Wainaina’s essay shows that he addresses the truth about how Africa is portrayed, especially by the Western world. The film’s plot reflects Wainaina’s argument in his essay. The Africans are portrayed as primitive and without the slightest knowledge of civilization. This is not true because even some people from the san community are learned and civilized and have probably used a Coca-Cola bottle before.
