Worksheet 8
Who is your favorite teacher in this video and why? Di your group agree with you or disagree? What were the other favorites in your group?
John and Andrea Gill together with entire fraternity of Alfred University. These teachers appear to stand out because of what they do and how they assist the students in becoming who they wish to be. From the moment they appear on the screen, one notices a difference in the way they approach teaching. For example, John immediately picks up a piece of paper and thinks of something that he can make with clay but the template is a piece of paper. He is quick to showcase what he is thinking which shows how he can help students to visualize what they wish to create. The way he designs the pot with a pair of scissors is almost instinctive and he makes it look so simple and effortless. Linda Sokora says that when John speaks to the students, “they listen closely and pay attention and think long about what he has to say” (min 43.42 – 43.48). John is a man who loves what he does and it is indeed clear from the video that he does. He is not struggling to express himself.
The system that Alfred University uses is also quite challenging in that it prompts students to think and to become artists. Andrea narrates from 44.09 to 45.03 and here she offers an overview of a certain program that pushes senior students to do things they would not have done before. She says that once students get to this point, they are introduced into a program that is not media specific and once here, one is not taught but is expected to visualize and create whatever they want. At this point, she notes that there is a lot of fear which I believe is a good way of helping the students to break free from their fears.
Not everyone agrees with me in my group and the other favorites are Therman and Mark Mitsuda. These two seem passionate about what they do. Therman, for example, took up the task of making students from different cultural backgrounds comfortable in what they are doing and who they are. He loves his job and this is exhibited through the way he interacts with the kids and appears to be enjoying his work. Mitsuda is also another person whose passion is not forced. His students are like his friends and they appear to have a good relationship and the sessions are quite interesting.
Worksheet 6:
What is a technique for doing something? What is your favorite technique for making musical instruments in this video. Please explain thoroughly.
A technique for doing something is the procedure which culminates from perfected skill of execution or performance for an artistic work or scientific work. In the context of this episode, Craft in America; Music, a technique is either passed down through generations or developed by an artist with strong passion for music. The artistic work of building the tool stems from the eventual sound to be produced by the instrument.
My favorite technique in producing music is by tailor making the instrument for the player. They do not build a ‘horn until they know who is going to play the instrument.’ The trumpet makers first discuss with the player his/her style of p...
