The movie explores the 2.2million number of prisoners in the American justice system. Ava DuVernay, the author of the documentary reveals a significant population being imprisoned over various issues that do not match the stated crimes. According to the staging at the start of the movie, the 13th amendment states that; “Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States.” (Lantigua-Williams, 2016)The movie then goes ahead to expose the racial inequality suffered by the African- Americans in the county and how most of the population go to jail on cases that should have received conviction during a first sitting. However, some blacks treat the whites well irrespective of the prevailing circumstances. In one incidence, a black woman is willing to rescue a white girl from a crisis whereby she tells the latter, “If you let me, I can help you.” This action reveals that the African-Americans are concerned about the welfare of the whites regardless of their racial differences. The 13th film in American history describes the impact of the Thirteenth Amendment on prisoners, leading to mass incarceration in the country.
Although the United States has just 5% of the world’s population, the film reveals that the country holds a significant demographic of prisoners. The number of prisoners represented in the movie does not match the small demographic in the country. In this case, most people in the United States are locked up for petty issues that should get convicted to minimize the escalating numbers. Although people may commit crimes, the justice system in the country does not follow the right procedures in rendering judgment. While the population might think it’s a small issue that could not call for imprisonment, the justice rules otherwise, resulting in a great rise in the number of prisoners. “13th" charts the explosive growth in America's prison population; in 1970, there were about 200,000 prisoners; today, the prison population is more than 2 million.” (IMDb.com, Inc., 2016) The film reveals a drastic increase in the number of inmates, showing that the justice system is still holding to convicting many people regardless of the small representation of the country in the global population. Although the whites were brutal with the Africans, some of them worried about their pathetic conditions at work during the forced labor sessions. “Those people are our responsibility”, says a white woman worried about their health. Although the whites are mistreating the Africans some people living with the racists argue that the workers should receive medical care, revealing humanity.
However, the greatest demographic of prisoners represent African Americans and not the entire population in the country. This issue shows the high rates of racial inequality in the country.
