In the 21st Century, teachers have become a central focus, particularly in movies. An example is The Chorus (French—Les Choristes) which focuses on a teacher by the name Clément Mathieu. The film occurs in a boarding school for young delinquents. The headteacher Rachim governs the institution with an iron fist. He often uses corporal punishment together with solitary confinement to intimidate the students. Clément Mathieu gets a job at the school. Because of his outsider’s perspective, Mathieu brings the care and humanity the students want. He forms a school choir and teachers the students how to sing. The move reduces the majority of indiscipline cases and enables the learners to have a sense of accomplishment. The movie is a culmination on what it means for a teacher to make a difference in the lives of students. By demonstrating self-discipline, forgiveness, kindness, understanding, firmness, and patience, teacher Clément Mathieu embodies the characteristics of a good teacher.
Good teaching requires a high level of self-discipline. According to Newton (1997), Self-discipline is an important trait that is needed by individuals to accomplish their goals. This is because it allows individuals to make decisions and stick through them without changing their minds. In The Chorus Mathieu is an individual who is determined to teach music to the students despite the challenging circumstances. When Mathieu arrives at the school for the first time, he is shocked to see how Rachin treats the young student in a cruel manner. Instead of continuing with the culture set by the headmaster, Mathieu decides that he will teach the pupils in his way. He dedicates his time to teaching them music, despite the opposing policies of the director. Mathieu does not get discouraged in his quest to teach the students music. At the start, Rachin does not support his ambitions. At the same time, Mathieu faces opposition from some of the students. For instance, he discovers some boys singing rude songs to him. However, due to his determination to teach them music, he does not give up on the students. Instead, he devises a plan where he will teach them to sing where they can be part of the choir. Without self-discipline, Mathieu would give up due to the challenges he is facing. However, being an individual who knows what he wants to accomplish, Mathieu has maintained self-discipline to attain his mission.
Dedication in the film makes Mathieu the best teacher in the school. Kenney (2010) believes that teachers need dedication to succeed in their professions. The author implies that teachers need to put a lot of effort if they are to realize better outcomes. The dedication of Mathieu towards the students is amazing. While he is aware of the dictatorial style of leadership Rachin uses, Mathieu is dedicated to ensuring that things improve. At one point, Mathieu witnesses headteacher Rachin punishing the boys ruthlessly. However, Mathieu is dedicated to improving their conditions. As a result, Mathieu uses humor and kindness to win the students over. Mathieu even goes the extra mile to hide the mistakes of the learners from the headteacher. For example, Le Querrec, one...
