The film Breakfast at Tiffany is perhaps one of the most memorable and iconic films that portrays the popular fashion and lifestyle of Americans during World War II era. Being filmed at New York and portrayed by Audrey Hepburn herself, the film was able to garner a huge audience base even until these days. Nonetheless, some of the things that really made a mark were the design, presentation, and allure of Hepburn’s fashion statement. Thus, this paper would focus on a reflection of the fashion during the said era. All in all, the author believes that through an examination of how Hepburn presents herself, the crucial elements of fashion during that period could easily be ascertained.
World War II Era Fashion
Fashion during the WWII Era in the United States was heavily dominated with simplistic designs that removed the heavy decorations that characterized previous fashion trends. While there are plenty of reasons for this change, one the main factors that led to it was the need for textiles and other pieces of clothing to support the ongoing war between the Axis and the Allied Powers. Despite being practical in nature, designers were still able to reinvent fashion in such a way that it appeals to the public by shifting the focus on women’s legs while also increasing the role of accessories in completing the look.[Monet, D. In line with the movie, this shift in trend could easily be seen based on how Hepburn presents herself. Most of the time she could be seen wearing her iconic black and tight Givenchy dress with a long slit starting from her feet to her knees. This outfit created both a distinction and similarity that is the reason why it ushered a new trend in fashion. On the one hand, the simplistic design of her dress fits perfectly with the simplistic appeal of clothing that dominated the market. This created a sense of belongingness and emotional connection between the character’s fashion and themselves.
