Segmentation, Gaps, and Focalization: Analysis

Essay Instructions:

Choose a song with lyrics and offer two brief analyses (roughly one page each) of it: one using the notion of narrative gaps (modeled on the analyses found in Filling in the Gaps Examples); and one using the notion of focalization (as described in Bringing Things Into Focus). You should analyze the same song with the two different techniques. Then answer the following questions:
Does segementivity/gapping or focalization seem to you a more effective way of reflecting on the song's musical meaning, or are they equally effective (or ineffective)?
Do you need to use both in order to make the best sense of the song? (One paragraph to answer both of these questions should be adequate.)
Note! You will likely have a much easier and more productive time with this assignment if you choose a song with lyrics that are at least loosely narrative. Lyrics that are more stream-of-consciousness or filled with nonsense syllables will be much more challenging.
There is no set minimum length for this essay, but experience suggests that it is challenging to fulfill the expectations of this assignment in fewer than 750 words, and all but impossible in fewer than 500. Likewise, there is no upper limit—you may write as much as you wish, but 1500 words should be adequate in most cases.

Filling the Gaps
This is the imagination of the listener concerning the narration of the song. The listener and reader have to create images in his/her mind, especially if the song has metaphorical meaning (Nkamanyang, 2008). This creates an unspecified subject making the listener and the reader formulate questions in his/her mind. In the case of the “God is a woman,” the artist gives a contradictory statement about God since Christians believe that God is described in a masculine pronoun. In the song, women are described as God since the singer tries to create the notion of women's empowerment and the strength depicted by women to reverting to the patriarchal nature of the society. The singer begins the song with the lyrics, “You, you love it how I move you, You love it how I touch you, My one, when all is said and done, You'll believe God is a woman (LyricFind, 2021).” This statement gives the reader many thoughts, thus formulating various questions on the song's overall message. Who is referred to as “you” in the song? What exactly does the move mean in this context? How does she move to the second person? Is the “move” a physical or emotional approach? This creates gaps for the listener is trying to figure out the intention of the song. For this case, “you” is a lover; thus, she tries to meditate the act of moving and touching in the essence of pleasing her, thus making him belie...
