Segmentation, Gaps, and Focalization in Reflecting the Song's Meaning

Essay Instructions:

Choose a song with lyrics and offer two brief analyses (roughly one page each) of it: one using the notion of narrative gaps (modeled on the analyses found in Filling in the Gaps Examples); and one using the notion of focalization (as described in Bringing Things Into Focus). You should analyze the same song with the two different techniques. Then answer the following questions:
Does segementivity/gapping or focalization seem to you a more effective way of reflecting on the song's musical meaning, or are they equally effective (or ineffective)?
Do you need to use both in order to make the best sense of the song? (One paragraph to answer both of these questions should be adequate.)
Note! You will likely have a much easier and more productive time with this assignment if you choose a song with lyrics that are at least loosely narrative. Lyrics that are more stream-of-consciousness or filled with nonsense syllables will be much more challenging.
There is no set minimum length for this essay, but experience suggests that it is challenging to fulfill the expectations of this assignment in fewer than 750 words, and all but impossible in fewer than 500. Likewise, there is no upper limit—you may write as much as you wish, but 1500 words should be adequate in most cases.

Elevator Operator-Courtney Barnett
The Notion of Narrative Gaps
"Thick head of hair, worries he's going baldWakes up at quarter past nineFair evades his way down the 96-tram lineBreakfast on the run again, he's well awareHe's dropping soy linseed Vegemite crumbs everywhere
Feeling sick at the sight of his computerHe dodges his way through the Swanston commutersRips off his tie, hands it to a homeless manSleeping in the corner of a metro bus stand and he screams"I'm not going to work todayGoing to count the minutes that the trains run lateSit on the grass building pyramids out of Coke cans"
Headphone wielding to the Nicholas buildingHe trips on a pothole that's not been filled inHe waits for an elevator, one to nineA lady walks in and waits by his sideHer heels are high and her bag…"
The "Elevator Operator" is a song with a gripping narrative, and the objective of this song is to tell a story and not prose. This particular song is filled with gaps; for example, the repetition of "He" in the last stanza has a different meaning. For example, the repetition explains the gender of the person waiting in the elevator, and every line in the gap leaves the audience with incomplete information. Some of the questions that may arise from the stanza include, what next after "He" awaits the elevator? Where is it heading to? Why does "He" choose the elevator rather than the stairs? These are some of the prominent gaps in the song that requires to be filled. Secondly, the first line gives two different statements requiring filling, "thick hair and bald," it just gives the audience the information but does not give full details about the event.
One part is talking about baldness, and the other about a thick head with hair. Both statements do fit to be prose or poetry but rather incomplete story. It is a technique to give a story without giving full details; it leaves the audience with the excitement to fill the gaps. Thirdly, the second stance gives a different story from the first stanza. For instance, "feeling sick and computer," there is no relationship between this statement and the previous statement (on the first stanza). In this case, the first stanza and the second do not seem to have a direct relationship nut it is the same story about the elevator. The two create a gap that requires to be filled. Notably, the second stanza gives a full story, but then it creates a gap in the third stanza.
