In Roger and Hammerstein's version of "My Favorite Thing," the song follows a structured and straightforward melody. It is easy to sing to, and the lyrics are written this way too. This explains the happy dancing around the video, which only ends when a man walks into the room. The song reflects a joyful moment between what seems to be a mother or maid with several children, cut short by a man who appears to be the father or butler in the house. Understanding the song's homely reference is visualized in the video with the woman in bed with several children where they are all wearing sleepwear.
John Coltrane Quartet's adaptation of the R&H melody is complex and lengthier. Coltrane's quartet does, however, make the original theme fit their genre. The use of multiple instruments does not affect the tune. It accentuates it and makes it smooth as other jazz pieces. Coltrane, in particular, makes this possible through a perfect execution with the saxophone.
The R&H melody is easy to discern in Coltrane's quartet performance. The saxophonist begins with a copy of the theme and then allows the rest of the band to play through before joining in again.
