Poem Analysis of John Donne's Song
Understanding the thematic relationship between the content and structure of poems is essential for any reader. It allows him to better appreciate the piece through an in-depth analysis of the various elements that create a cohesive whole. In this article, I would like to make an in-depth analysis of John Donne's poem entitled Song. This analysis would include an overview of the poem's theme and structure and an in-depth focus on its contents. All in all, I believe that through an in-depth analysis of poetry, it becomes possible to have a better appreciation of any piece of literature.
Overview
One of the main reasons why Donne's poem is an interesting piece is its structure and delivery. On the one hand, it could be seen that the poem's speaker is a man, while its tone is light and frivolous. This could easily be noticed based on how the author has delivered his ideas about a woman in a somehow candid and jesting manner, as exemplified by his emphasis on giving a series of 'impossibilities.' This could be illustrated as early as the beginning of the poem when the author specifically enumerated various tasks such as (1) catch a falling star, (2) getting with a child a mandrake root, (3) tell him who cleft the devil’s foot, and (4) teach him to hear mermaids singing, among others.
