For an individual to exhibit resilience, it is critical to have coherence among different aspects of their identity. In David Reimer's case, there was no significant coherence in the different parts that defined his identity. From a young age, David felt he did not fit in socially, especially in his early years as Brenda. He also felt like no one understood what he went through, especially after his brother's death. Culturally, the society he lived in did not fully embrace that an individual could change their sex. Additionally, there was no coherence between his spirituality and sexuality. He never felt peace knowing that he had gone through so much in his childhood and was not brave enough to share it.
