Social Identity Theory and its Application
Among all the theories from the modules, the most resonating theory is the social identity theory. The theory provides a motivational explanation of in-group bias and allows individuals to focus on the group outcome, either out-groups or in-groups (Hahn Tapper, 2013). Besides, it focuses on the positive evaluation of an individual based on group membership. Therefore, the theory heavily influences social justice in education. According to Hahn Tapper (2013), identity plays a significant role in shaping and implementing educational justice (p.414). Therefore, it is essential to consider the student's identities throughout the educational setting. The teachers need to approach the students singly and not in a group to enhance social justice.
