It is an important concept that informs key decision affecting athletes and how they perceive themselves. In summary, athletic identity refers to the level of “strength and exclusivity to which a person identifies with the athlete role or the degree to which one devotes special attention to sport relative to other engagements or activities in life” (Edison et al., 2021, p. 2). It determines the level of personal connection that an individual has towards the sport or activity. In this regard, the character usually influences the mental wellbeing of the person because it defines their behaviors, actions, and other aspects that influence their lives (Downs & Ashton, 2011). It is usually based on the concept of ‘self,’ which is basically what determines the emotions, feelings, and other actions of people in their lives (Kissinger et al., 2011). Therefore, a culture that supports athletes wellbeing will eliminate negative mental health challenges and ensure that sportsmen have positive experiences in their day-to-day lives. It is also important to create incentives for training practitioners that can directly engage and participate in sporting activities. This will ensure that they are able to understan...
