Vaillant's contribution to adult developmental theories of change began in 1938 with a multi-year longitudinal study of 268 Harvard University students from the classes of 1939 to 1944 (Westermeyer, J. 2013). According to the author's research, there was an age cycle of the stage for men of various ages that differed depending on the life-event experience (Vaillant, G. 2002). Intimacy, professional consolidations, career, keeper of meaning, integrity, identity, and generativity are the six categories that were used to characterize these changes. The author stated that each of the following changes in a person's life was critical for the development of human crisis and if they might be hampered. Then there could be a slew of personal flaws and shortcomings. The doctor went on to suggest that environmental circumstances and people's associated factors could prohibit someone from making this transformation (Westermeyer, J. 2013).
