Erickson’s theory of psychological development is modified from Freud’s theory of psycho-sexual development. Erickson stipulates that ego is useful in development for it masters skills, ideas, and attitudes. This kind of mastery makes children grow into reliable members of society who contribute to society’s wellbeing (Svetina, 2014). Erickson divides his theory into eight stages, and in each, there is a psychological conflict that must be conquered to facilitate the transition from childhood to adulthood.
The fifth stage, identity versus role confusion, involves adolescents, preferably 12-18 years. At this stage, the individual is developing a sense of self.
