Introduction
Capital punishment has been practiced in some countries for decades, and it has elicited a heated debate on its effects. Most of the people subscribing to either pro or anti-death penalty debates have their reasons why it should be upheld. In my opinion, capital punishment should continue for its role in the criminal justice system is invaluable. This article discusses some premises on why death punishment should be upheld.
3 Premises That Support Death Penalty
Death penalty eliminates criminals who otherwise would continue to cause more harm to the community. The death penalty is given to people who have committed first-degree murders and thus can likely do more harm if left to be in the society. They may escape prison, organize for murders from within prison, get paroles or even ill fellow inmates. The best way to ensure these people cannot kill more people is by eliminating them. It should be sustained as a preventive mechanism. To prevent more deaths in the hands of the same criminals.
It is also meant for the justice of the people who they killed and families. To get even, these people need to pay the ultimate price to serve justice to their victims though it may not even be enough. Judging from the nature of crimes these people commit, any lesser sentence is inadequate to serve justice. The justice system is the voice of the dead and the families who cannot take on these criminals alone. It helps them heal from the loss of their loved ones to barbaric individuals who ended their lives.
Capital punishment is a deterrent. People fear crime because of the fear of this sentence. They understand the gravity of this punishment, and because of the love of their own lives, they make better choices that do not take the lives of other people. Some people could take innocent lives if it were not for this punishment.

Some people strongly oppose death punishment on various grounds. They argue that it does not eliminate criminals who could cause more loss of lives. They argue that these people can be imprisoned for life thus not able to cause more harm to the society. Additionally, they may change their character and become good citizens and kill them would be denying them a chance to create a positive impact on good citizens if released back to the society.
Opposers of capital punishment also argue that it does not necessarily serve justice for the victims and their families. They argue that some people are wrongly convicted because of the flawed justice system or being framed for these crimes. Additionally, more killing does not bring the victims back to life.
