Compare and contrast: To an Athlete, Dying Young & When I Was ONE-AND-TWENTY
To an Athlete, Dying Young poem is about an athlete who died young. It starts with a description of the athlete lived before his early death. He had won a race, and when he came home as a hero, he received a warm welcome and carried around the marketplace. The second stanza describes the death and funeral of the young man and metaphorically describes death as a transition to another life. From the land of living to the land of the dead. The later parts of the poem the author describe some of the advantages of dying young to justify the death of the young athlete.
When I Was ONE-AND-TWENTY poem describes a young man aged 21 years who was being given some life lessons by an old man on love. The young man neglects the advice from the old man on why he shouldn’t play with love as it comes with bitter lessons. However, a year later the young man learns his lessons for neglecting the old man’s advice which he seems he paid a hefty price.
One key similarity of the poems is the fact that they describe the lives of young men. The same author has also written them. Both poems seem to contain some advice for the youth to perceive the meaning of youthful life differently.
