You will need to first secure a preschool or childcare program where you can conduct these observations/assessments. Be sure that you have allotted free time to observe AND not a participant, unless the technique deems it necessary. For this part of the portfolio you will use the following techniques:

1. Math Checklist: Standardized Assessment Read Chapter 9 in your text. Use the Math Checklist to administer to a child of the appropriate age group. You may want to administer the checklist during an open-ended manipulatives exploration.

2. Literacy Rating Scale Read Chapter 10 in your text. Administer the literacy rating checklist in a preschool or Early Childhood classroom (kindergarten age). Be sure to include your finished rating scale

After completing each technique write a summary/reaction paper and label it according to this format and be sure to cite your text using APA format as well:

I. Objective summary of your findings: In this section give the data you found from the techniques, use numbers, statistics and so forth as applicable.

II. Reactions and Interpretations: Write a report drawing conclusions and inferences about your findings, in that, the child, the setting, teacher, the use of the various tools, etc.

III. Connection to Standards: Based on the knowledge you have gained using these tools, explain and connect it to the following standards:

A. Explain the value and benefits of the tools you used. • An exemplary response might include a specific example of how you would use each tool to inform teaching/learning.

3a: Understanding the goals, benefits, and uses of assessment – including its use in development of appropriate goals, curriculum, and teaching strategies for young children

B. Based on your experiences using these tools write about each of the following: 1. Discuss your experiences in the data collection process. 2. How might technology facilitate the use of these tools?

3b: Knowing about and using observation, documentation, and other appropriate assessment tools and approaches, including the use of technology in documentation, assessment and data collection.

2. How might you use those inferences to inform teaching and learning, including a child with a disability?

• An exemplary response would include actual objectives/goals for an activity based on the use of the tools.

D. For these tools, explain in detail how you would use the results to share with BOTH colleagues AND the family.

• An exemplary response might create a handout that you would share with a family/parent based on the results and uses of the information for PARTS A, B and C on the child you’ve focused on.
