Testing with Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Populations

Article Critique Instructions:

The Scholarly Critique is an opportunity for students to engage with contemporary assessment literature, particularly literature pertaining to cultural influences on personality assessment and contemporary assessment practice.
In scholarly critiques, reviewers challenge authors to hone and extend their ideas. Consequently, students will say more than whether they enjoyed or disliked the article. Rather, they will analyze and extend the ideas, findings, and conclusions presented. They will challenge and develop their colleagues’ work in a respectful, scientifically based manner in order to promote the collective knowledge of the field. In this exercise, students should aim to do the same.

The article to be critiqued is: Ortiz, S.O., Piazza, N., Ochoa, S.H., Dynda, A.M. (2018). Testing with culturally and linguistically diverse populations: New directions in fairness and validity. In D.P. Flanagan & McDonough, E.M. (Eds.), Contemporary intellectual assessment: Theories, tests, and issues (4th ed.). (pp. 684-714). Guilford Press.
Accordingly, each student will present a review of an assigned article or book chapter. As is appropriate for the type of material reviewed, the paper should include:
1. Presentation of the authors’ questions, methods, and conclusions; for non-research material, students should present the author’s central aim and thesis.
2. Evaluation of whether the authors addressed their questions or aims effectively and, when appropriate, with appropriate and adequate scientific rigor.
3. If an article includes data, determination of whether the data and data analysis adequately supported the findings,
4. Discussion of what remains to be examined on the topic, with particular attention to marginalized populations or any other aspect related to socially responsible practice. Students might refer to “A Movement for Justice: Socially Responsible Practice” document (Williamson, 2020) or the “Cultural Competence in Assessment with Dr. Linda McGhee” podcast (Sharp, 2020) to inform their thinking.
5. Suggestion of new methods of analysis or conceptual/theoretical approaches that might strengthen the authors’ approach
6. Identification of three additional references students might consult to further their understanding of ideas presented. All references should be cited according to the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (7th ed.) (American Psychological Association, 2020).
Students will be evaluated according to whether they adequately present and critique their article or chapter, as well as submit the three additional references in proper APA format and on time.

Summary
The authors use different methods, questions, and conclusions to achieve their goals in the article with a precise central aim. The main method that the authors utilize is non-referenced tests which effectively evaluate individuals' abilities from diverse linguistically and cultural backgrounds (Ortiz et al., 2018). The authors also provide significant direction for advanced test developments. The major question that the authors consider is whether English tests without bias would lead to effective conclusions and enhance future test development. The authors also use standardized tests to show cultural competency.
Evaluation
The authors addressed their aims effectively with adequate scientific rigor since they focused on key scientific elements, validity, and reliability while working with culturally and linguistically diverse groups. Reliability and validity are scientific concepts that determine the quality of the research (Ortiz et al., 2018). Reliability and validity are important in understanding cultural competence since they embrace proper engagement without biases. They show the effectiveness of the authors in meeting specific obligations in conducting the comprehensive assessment. The authors also achieved their aims appropriately by showing the importance of cultural competence in promoting unity and growth among different populations. Lastly, the data and data analysis supported the findings since the authors realized that using linguistically and culturally diverse populations enhances fairness and validity. Therefore, based on the evaluation, the article meets a specific threshold for fair tests by considering culturally and linguistically diverse populations.
Discussion
The article adequately shows how using linguistically and culturally diverse populations can be used to promote fairness and validity. However, the main aspect remaining to be considered is enhancing social justice during the cultural competence assessment. Social justice is vital in assessment since it motivates the marginalized groups towards achieving learning objectives similarly to other populations (Shepard et al., 2018). Social justice would also allow the learners to promote their critical thinking skills. Therefore, whenever the authors adequately examine the topic, it would red...
