Task

Audience: Other students in 101 and your instructor
Purpose: To reflect on your previous experience with language, reading, writing, and education and make a claim about how this experience impacts you as a writer today
Genre: An autobiographical essay
Conventions: 1000-1500 words with MLA citation conventions for in-text citations and a works cited page


Prior to enrollment in English 101, you have had years of experience with language, reading, writing, and learning in school, family, and community settings. These experiences come with you to the classroom and inform how and why you communicate today. For this assignment, you will write an autobiographical essay about your personal experiences with language, reading, writing, and learning. You do not need to write about all your experiences with language, reading, writing, and learning; such an essay would be long! Instead, your purpose is to present a significant experience with language, reading, writing, or learning that has made you who you are as a writer today.

As you write this autobiography, you should pay attention to the genre conventions of an autobiographical essay and the rhetorical situation of this assignment. Consider the following questions as you write:

Author: Who are you as a writer, a reader, a college student, or other identity? How do you wish to represent yourself in your autobiography, and how will you achieve that representation?
Purpose: Given that your purpose is to reflect on a previous literacy experience and how it impacts you as a writer today, how will you achieve this purpose in your essay?
Audience: Given that your audience includes other 101 students and your instructor, how will this audience inform the content, structure, or language of your literacy autobiography? How will you keep your audience engaged in your autobiography?
Genre: Given that your genre is an autobiography, what are the genre conventions (structure, formatting, language usage, and mechanics) that you need to apply?
Content: What experiences will you present in your autobiography? How will you use description and narration to present these experiences? Why are these experiences important to who you are as a writer in college?
Structure: How will you structure your autobiography? What structure will help your audience easily understand your autobiography and its significance?
Language: What linguistic choices will you make in your essay? How formal or informal should your language be? How can you revise and edit your language to meet your rhetorical purpose in the genre?

Rhetorical choices- Does the literacy autobiography effectively fulfill its purpose and appeal to the audience?
Content choices- Does the literacy autobiography present a significant experience using description and narration?
Genre choices- Does the literacy autobiography effectively apply genre conventions?
Structural choices- Does the literacy autobiography follow a logical arrangement?
Linguistic choices- Does the literacy autobiography use effective language for the genre and rhetorical situation?

My Literacy Journey
Throughout my life, have witnessed my definition and understanding of literacy expand drastically. When I was young, I believed that that literacy is the ability to read but with time, I came to realize that literacy is an intricate journey involving taking written words and internalizing their meaning to the audience and expressing feelings and opinions in writing. This is not even mastered in secondary school. That is understandable because although I’m in college, my literacy is still evolving and I feel I have a lot left for me to learn. In this autobiography paper, I will demonstrate how my experiences as acquired throughout my “growing up” inform my literacy acquisition and my writing today.
I spent my time as a young child and a reader with my and this forms my earliest literacy memory. I remember reading books such as the Little Critter. I have lost some memories of this reading but I can remember some funny pictures. I also remember most of the memorable adventures that instigated my journey toward becoming a literate person. I also watched a lot of television and movies but what has contributed a lot to my reading is the time I spent in school learning. The journey started with our alphabet, letter sound, creating words form the sounds, and stringing words into complete sentences. I supplemented my school work with home readings. My mom was my main literacy sponsor. I read the Holy Bible a lot. My upbringing is characterized by the high regard for Christian values that is why I read scriptural accounts a lot.
Like any other young person, I choose movies over reading books. I did not embrace reading for pleasure which meant that I would read books only in school. However, in secondary school, I could not avoid American literature and I enjoyed each one of them. I also feel that the literacy was implanted in me mostly through my schooling writing. My teacher of English in the 4th Grade helped us improve our literacy by making us read higher grade books. She wanted us to improve our reading by staying ahead of time by reading more advanced readings and learning grammar through experience. My 6th-grade teacher of English is responsible for much of exceptional writing. She made writing and all class times interesting. She gave us the freedom to write essays but using a basic formula and structure that was easy to understand and follow.
My early writings were poems and comics. Currently, I write blogs among other simpler writings. I can help other writers in academic writing and write informative articles. Most of the people I have come across have appreciated my work and are fascinated by my writing styl...
