Art history discussion. Literature & Language Essay

In this week's lesson, and in previous weeks, we have discussed works of art and the contexts in which they exist/are shown. How does seeing an object in its original context, and in a new (and perhaps unintended) context, change the way a work of art communicates? What, for example, is the difference between seeing a medieval altarpiece in the context of the church ( and perhaps a particular chapel) for which it was made versus seeing the same altarpiece at the Museum of Fine Arts behind glass? Or, seeing a Minimalist cube in a gallery for which it was made versus outdoors in an open-air courtyard at the Museum of Modern Art?
Along with the differences, are there any similarities in the two experiences ("original" versus new settings)? Please note that the point here is not to choose a "favorite" setting (original or new), but simply to reflect on the similarities and differences in the experience of the work of art when its setting has changed.
Finally, can you cite at least one example of a work of art discussed in this course in which the original setting has been changed? Discuss.
