4. Based on the readings, what are worker rights? What is at the heart of worker rights? What is being protected? Should workers have a right to participate in decisions that affect their workplace lives? Are worker rights negotiable?
5. Based on the readings and your own perspective, are worker rights and human rights the same thing? To what extent do worker rights flow from human rights and what are some examples? Are human rights more important or more fundamental than worker rights?

Although some conventions and rights are understood as universal, others are said to be determined by national sovereignty and national, regional, state or even local based social and cultural values, norms and customs. In your reading, James Gross referred to “cultural relativism” and used the example of Bangkok Declaration and the assertion that human rights are rooted in “Western values” which the Asian nations were distinguishing from “Asian values.” Is this acceptable to you? To what extent should human and/or worker rights be defined by national preference, and/or social and cultural values, norms and customs?

Rights are lawful, moral, or societal doctrines of liberty that define what is permissible of the people in a particular legal structure or social agreement. Acquired or granted rights are those that cannot be automatically rescinded if a law or treaty concerned with them is deemed inapplicable. Acquired rights cannot be removed once a person or an institution recognizes them and has used them. Rights can be acquired in several ways. Rights acquired naturally are those that originate from human nature or supernatural power and are universal (Gross & Compa, 2009). Claimed rights are those define that another individual is obliged to a duty to the right holder. Liberty rights involve permission granted to the right holder to act in a certain way or do something. There are numerous classifications and doctrines that also define various human rights. The constitution and the typical legislation have the power to grant rights or alter them the best way possible. 
Conventions are agreements between various states that lawfully bind the contracting nations. Conventions span in various diverse international aspects like trade, transport, crime, human rights, and others. A convention is termed lawfully obligatory to a specific country when the nation approves it (Gross & Compa, 2009). Even if the ratification barely proves the convention is binding, it shows the support towards the policies of the convention together with the state’s intent to sanction it. The human rights conventions lack any enforcement mechanism, as the international convention, which has a specific body bound to ensure contracting nations adhere to the convention policies. The convention aims at protecting, promoting, and ensuring equality in human rights enjoyment across the states. The convention, however, is not obligated to the creation of new rights.
